Civil Register Statistics 2006

Civil Register Statistics 2006

It presents information relative to vital facts occurred in the country, encompassing the overall number of birth registers of infants born alive, of deaths and fetal deaths, as well information relative to marriages informed by Natural Persons Register Offices and information about judicial separations and divorces reported by Family Courts or Civil Courts.

The highlights in this edition of the survey are two methodological changes effected in order to improve these statistics. With reference to births, the percentage of underreport is now calculated considering data which result from more recent prospects; with reference to deaths, the aggregation of registers now considers, in the overall result for the year, events which occurred in the survey reference year and were registered up to the end of the first quarter of the subsequent year.

The publication also presents the definition of characteristics investigated in the survey and an analysis of the information disseminated, highlighting the low levels of coverage of registers of births and deaths of infants under one year of age in several areas all over the country, especially in the North and Northeast Regions.

This group of information is available in the CD-ROM which comes enclosed with the publication. The SIDRA database presents the time series of vital statistics surveyed since 1984.

The civil register statistics constitute an important instrument for the monitoring of the Brazilian population evolution, for the exercise of citizenship and for the implementation of public policies, especially those aimed at the field of public health.
