System of Cultural Information and Indicators

System of Cultural Information and Indicators 2003-2005

In 2004, IBGE established a partnership with the Ministry of Culture in order to develop a consistent and continuous basis of cultural-related information and to build cultural indicators to be applied to studies, researches and publications. Though these indicators, the institution is able to provide governmental and public institutions, besides society in general, with data for more specific studies. The result of this partnership was a study based on statistics of production (supply) of goods and services, household and government expenditure (demand), and characteristics of manpower in this sector (employment) produced by IBGE. In order to do so, data from seven databases produced by the institution, having as 2003 as the year of reference, have been used: Central Register of Enterprises, Annual Survey of Industry – Enterprise, Annual Survey of Trade, Annual Survey of Services, Consumer Expenditure Survey, Economic Statistics of Public Administration and National Household Sample Survey.

As a continuation to this project, IBGE now releases the results of the latest study conducted about the topic, focused on the period 2003-2005.

This publication presents the methodological aspects related to the description and classification of economic activities directly or indirectly related to culture and in accordance with the National Classification of Economic Activities – CNAE 1.0 and a brief description of surveys used as sources. It also brings an analysis of the indicators selected for the characterization of this production sector, not only in terms of economic aspects of production, but also in terms of the expenditure of Brazilian families with the acquisition of these products and the budget expenses of the government with administration, operation and support to the organization of culture in the country, and also in relation to the socioeconomic profile of the population employed in culture activities. The material includes a glossary with relevant concepts to the understanding of the results.

All the information is available in the CD-ROM included in the publication.
