Consumer Expenditure Survey – POF 2002-2003

Anthropometry and analysis of the nutritional status of children and teenagers in Brazil

The Consumer Expenditure Survey 2002-2003 was aimed at providing data relative to the composition of domestic budgets, based on the investigation of consumer habits, of the allocation of expenses and of the distribution of income, according to characteristics of households and their members. The survey also investigated the self-perception in relation to life conditions by the Brazilian population.

As a sequence to the release of information in the survey, IBGE presents, in this publication, the results which refer to the anthropometric measures of children and teenagers up to 19 years of age, who were investigated in this survey. The study was conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Health. For the analysis of results, IBGE received the aid of technicians from the institute itself and of widely experienced and respected nutrition experts brought by the Ministry. As a pattern of reference for the comparisons were used age and sex measures made available by the National Center for Health Statistics – NCHS, according to recommendations of the World Health Organization – WHO.

Besides the profile of growth and evolution of the weight of children and teenagers, the survey presents an analysis of the nutritional status based on a nthropometric indexes applied to the evaluation of these population groups.

The highlights are comparative analyses with results obtained from the National Study of Household Expenditure – ENDEF, conducted by IBGE, in 1974-1975, and from the National Survey on Health and Nutrition – PNSN, conducted by INAN in partnership with IPEA and IBGE, in 1989.

The publication also contains concepts and definitions of the variables investigated, the procedures used in data collecting, as well as a description of the methodology concerning the analyses presented.
