Analysis of the household availability of food and nutritional condition in Brazil
The Consumer Expenditure Survey 2002-2003 aimed at supplying information about the composition of the household expenditure, from the investigation of consumption habits, expenses allocation and distribution of income, according to the characteristics of households and persons. POF also investigated the auto perception of life conditions of the Brazilian population.
Following the publication of information of the survey, IBGE presents, in this publication, survey carried out from data relative to the availability of food in the household and anthropometric measures of Brazilian population aged 20 and over investigated in the ambit of this survey. The survey was carried out in partnership with Health Ministry (Ministério da Saúde). For the analysis of results, IBGE had the contribution of technicians of the partner Organization and also specialists in nutrition, of well known experience and competence, grouped by that Ministry.
It is also presented, besides the nutritional condition of adult population, the evaluation of availability of household food for the set of the population, based on the quantity of food and beverage acquired in the year by the families for household consumption. It is highlighted the comparative analysis of results in the last 30 years, since the realization of the first survey about household expenditure in Brazil, the National Survey of Household Expenditure - ENDEF, in 1974. Concepts and definitions of the variables investigated in the survey are also presented, the procedures used in the data collection, as well as the description of the methodological model of the analysis which was accomplished.
The results published in the current survey, available in the CD-ROM enclosed with the publication, contribute for the integrated understanding of the various aspects which compose the portrait of the social and economical conditions of Brazilian families.
