Survey of Medical-Sanitary Assistance

Health Statistics: Medical-Sanitary Assistance

The survey of medical-sanitary assistance investigates all the health institutions existing in the country and which provide individual or collective health assistance services, profit or non-profit, at public or private institutions with ambulatory or hospitalization services, including those which perform exclusively services of support to diagnosis and therapy and regular control of zoonosis, with the main objective of revealing the profile of installed capacity and of the supply of health services in Brazil.

With this publication, IBGE brings to the public the results obtained by the survey in 2005, relative to the number of establishments, by administrative level, functioning status, category and type of service offered; services rendered by type of financing agent (SUS, private and insurance); employed persons; beds existing in establishments with hospitalization; volume of hospitalization; besides information about medical equipment in conditions to be used in the establishments investigated, by Major Region, Federative Units and Capitals. It also includes data about the evolution of health establishments and beds existing in the country, in the period of 1976 – date of the first results under the responsibility of IBGE – to 2005.

The publication also brings technical notes about the survey, an analysis which encompasses the main inter- regional differences observed in the indicators selected, illustrated with tables, graphs and maps, and a glossary with the concepts considered relevant to the understanding of the results. The CD ROM which comes enclosed with the publication contains, besides information released in the printed volume, tables and cartograms by Federative Units, according to the supply of services and the number of equipment units selected, and also questionnaires and the instruction manual used for the collection of information.

The data released by the Survey of Medical Sanitary Assistance – which in 1999, 2002 and 2005 received support from the Ministry of Health – has contributed to the identification of regional demands of public investments in the sector and, together with other indicators, has made it possible to implement a diversity of programs in order to supply specific needs aimed at offering better access of the population to health services.
