Demographic Census 2000 : First Sample Results

The release of the first sample results of Demographic Census 2000 represents the conclusion of a portrait of Brazil , in the end of the millennium. It also evidences that the Brazilian society now holds the main source of information for the analysis and deeper knowledge of national reality, a tool which serves as the basis for the exercise of citizenship, for the choice of public policies and of private investments, among other aspects.

In an effort to fulfill users' expectations, IBGE, an institution which has disseminated the results of its surveys through the use of modern technology, offers to the public a wide variety of alternatives which help maximize the application Census 2000 results. The means for the dissemination of census information range from printed publications, which are divided into two parts and complemented by a CD ROM, and DVDs which contain the smallest units of information – micro data. There are new digital tools available, such as Estatcart. It is a system for the exploration of georeferenced data which allows visualization at several geographic levels (states, municipalities, districts and census sectors). Other tools applied are Internet-accessed databases, such as the Automatic Recovery System of Aggregated Databases – SIDRA – which makes it possible to recover hundreds of tables; the Multidimensional Statistical Bank, which is at the technology frontier and allows the combination of micro data at several levels; and a Map Server, which makes it possible to visualize areas and to group information, and works as a facilitator of studies which use the spatial dimension in their analyses.

This publication presents the most relevant tabulations of the data investigated in the sample questionnaire. Throughout the year 2003, new tabulations by topic will be produced, presenting more combinations thus distributed: Overall Characteristics of the Population, Education, Labor and Income, Migration and Moving, Marriage and Fertility Rates and Families and Households.
