Demographic Census 2000 : Marriage and Fertility Rates -Sample Results

In this publication, as a sequence to the release of thematic volumes with the Demographic Census 2000 sample results, IBGE presents the main demographic, social and economic characteristics of persons aged 10 years or over by marital status and the determining factors of fertility of women in this same age group, expanding, this way, the types of data released in the volume Demographic Census 2000: first sample results.

The results relative to marriage rates encompass information about relationship conditions, marital status and types of union of persons aged 10 years or over. In terms of fertility, the census investigates the number of women who had babies, the number of babies delivered, born alive and born dead – and the number of surviving children. The analysis of these data is focused on the main social, economic and cultural aspects observed in each one of the topics presented, especially color or race, religion, level of schooling, monthly household income, among others, as well as on the contrasts observed among different geographic and population strata in the country. As a complement to this group of information, there is a study of infant mortality, with special emphasis to the social and regional inequalities observed in the analysis of this indicator, considering its importance to the evaluation of health and life conditions of the population in the country. The publication also includes methodological notes and the concepts and definitions applied . The CD-ROM enclosed with the publication presents, besides the information in the printed volume, data for the Major Regions and Federative Units, mezoregions, micro regions and municipalities and the complete table plan which is the aim of the publication of Demographic Census 2000: first sample results .

The results are estimates obtained by the expansion of the sample of 5 304 711 households and 20 274 412 persons, selected from all over the national territory.
