Demographic Census 2000 Atlas

As the final step in the release of Demographic Census 2000 results, IBGE presents, in this Atlas, the configuration of the national territory and the great variety of elements which constitute the dynamics and the profile of the evolution of its population. This way, it expands the analyses of demographic contrasts and of social and regional inequalities highlighted in previously published results.

The Demographic Census 2000 Atlas brings an innovation to the release of Brazilian Demographic Censuses, which are traditionally presented as tables. The Atlas presents a group of maps which illustrate, in a summarized way, the participation of Brazil in the world, the political and administrative division of the country, the spatial dynamics and mobility of the population, the urbanization process, the housing conditions of households and the cultural, social and economic profile of the population. These data, organized at different geographical levels – Federative Units, municipalities, census sectors and hydrographic elements – are enriched with analytical texts, graphs, tables and images which evidence the regional specificities observed. The publication also includes a glossary with the terms and concepts considered relevant to the understanding of the results.

For the aforementioned reasons, the Atlas is a valuable source of information for national strategic plans and for the formulation of public policies aimed at overcoming historical inequalities which characterize Brazilian society and territory.
