Monthly Survey of Trade

The Monthly Survey of Trade produces indicators that allow the monitoring of the behavior of retail trade in the country, by investigating the gross sales revenue of formally established companies, with 20 or more employed persons, and whose main activity is retail trade. The survey was started in January 1995, only in the Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro, producing indicators for the real and nominal revenues, employed persons and wages and other compensations. Having started in 1997, the survey was expanded to the Metropolitan Areas of Recife and Salvador. The version of the survey with national coverage was started in 2000, producing volume and nominal indicators subdivided into five groups of activities, for Brazil and the states of Ceará, Pernambuco, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Goiás and Federal District. Retail trade indicators for the remaining units of the federation are made available without subdivision. The series of the survey with base 2003= 100 started in January 2004. The segment "Other articles of personal and domestic use" was subdivided, initiating the series of indicators for the segments of "Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles", "Office, computer and communication equipment", "Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery articles" and "Other articles of personal and domestic use". The series 2003=100 expanded the coverage of the indicators including "Construction material" and initiated the index series of the Extended Retail Trade. This series aggregates, to the indexes of retail trade, the activities "Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces" and "Construction material", which also include the wholesale segment.
