The data were collected by an additional questionnaire, filled by respondents together with the regular PNAD survey. The concepts of the characteristics surveyed and the sample design are also included. The title of each volume indicates the respective dissemination level of the results.

The study reveals a new stage of demographic transition, characterized by the prevalence of lower fertility rates and progressive decrease of mortality, with reflexes, on one side, over the reduction of the adult segment of the population in the labor market and, on the other, over the increase of demand in the areas of health and social security. The text analyzes the information from the supplement of the Monthly Employment Survey of July 1998, which includes four queries about color and origin of the respondents. From those results, it has been possible to study the diverse denominations given to skin color by the Brazilian population, relating them to the categories applied in the surveys carried out by IBGE, and investigate those characteristics, reconstructing their etymology, specifying their current usage and delimiting their regional meanings. It includes some considerations about the racial issue in the Brazilian context, the bibliography used and appendixes with the percent distribution of the color categories and the composition of each one of the color variables found by the survey.

These results are provided for the total and for each one of the six main Brazilian metropolitan areas (Recife, Salvador, Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Porto Alegre) that are covered by the Monthly Employment Survey. In the course of the pilot project for the survey of Standards of Life in the country's Northeast and Southeast Regions, by agreement with the World Bank, IBGE carried out a detailed assessment of welfare and characteristics determining poverty. It started with an integrated study of the various economic and social conditions of the household.
This publication presents an analysis of the main information obtained by the survey concerning the population aged 0 to 6 years, evincing the socialization conditions of this population group, life conditions of families as well as aspects related to schooling, nutritional profile, health and mortality. Contrasting the poorest and the richest regions of the country, the results presented reveal the inequalities observed in the distribution of material and educational resources among families in these regions.

Proposes indicators to draw a profile of housing conditions, based on the information on household characteristics available from the basic questionnaire of the National Household Sample Survey-PNAD. The second part shows three examples applying the classification proposed, using other variables of the basic and additional questionnaires of the 1988 PNAD for the three metropolitan areas.
